to honour, 2019 (Video Still)

To Honour is an experimental beaded animation exploring the concept of returning beadwork back to the landscape. In the summer of 2019 I was excited to be asked to participate in the Glam Collective’s week intensive and Memory Keepers 2 program. During the week intensive program I created my first beaded animation with the help from Chris Spencer-Lowe and technical equipment from NSCAD University.

Slow gesture (in)stills is a print series that references beaded animation made to honour the life of a plant depicted. These particular prints honours the Indian potato. The cycle of slowing down the already slow gesture of beadwork, speeding through stop motion animation, then sectioning moments within that gesture, proposes a way to contemplate the action of honouring. To slow down is to take time and think through the making of a single object, a single movement, a single image, a time to respect the earth and other than human beings around us. These gestures instill a deep respect for the process of making, from the tactility of beading to capturing the action on video, and the visual marker of printing.
