she contains a world
she contains a world is a photo sculpture of a pregnant woman holding the earth, while the earth holds her, framed in a wave of beaver fur. The title is inspired by recent instagram posts speaking to the incredible loss of children lives during the Gaza genocide, still taking place and still claiming lives of people; including an incredible amount of the next generation (young people and the unborn). From October 7th, 2023 onwards, the state of Israel has been taking the lives of children at a heartbreaking rate. Many people took to social media to share their feelings of the lives lost with the expression that each child’s life is a world. The artist stands in solidarity with Palestinians and the countless innocent people across the globe experiencing harm by imperialism and capitalism.
she contains a world is a part of a growing series of works Carrie and photo-based artists exploring world building through collaboration, honouring traditional mark making (on the body and on/with the land), and celebrating seasons and cycles (body and land). The use of beaver fur is inspired by this keystone relative that builds dams to build worlds by supporting a multitude of life forms, and is reflective of Leanne Betasamosake Simpson’s A Short History of the Blockade in which Simpson relates beaver dams to activist blockade’s as methods for disrupting capital and colonial state agendas. Carrie and each collaborator worked closely together to develop each piece in the series.
